When we set out to create the “Dhalia Collection”, I wanted to capture the beauty and history of French table top design and make it relevant to modern life. For me, this collection isn’t just about plates and bowls—it’s about paying homage to centuries of French craftsmanship, and making it relevant again for today’s dining experiences. The scalloped edges you see in each piece are a nod to the regal plates and serve ware once found in the royal courts of 18th and 19th century France.
A Tribute to French Craftsmanship
French craftsmanship in the 18th century was unmatched, and scalloped dinnerware was a signature of aristocratic dining. These curved, intricate designs were a reflection of the thoughtful elements seen in everything from Versailles architecture to Louis XVI furniture. Every detail was considered, and dining was an art form. I wanted to bring that sense of occasion and attention to detail into the “Dhalia Collection”—but in a way that feels timeless and modern.
The Meaning Behind the Scalloped Edge
The scalloped edge has always fascinated me. It’s a design motif that has been part of European art since the Renaissance, symbolizing both luxury and a connection to the natural world. In the “Dhalia Collection”, I’ve reinterpreted these historical shapes to suit both traditional and modern table settings. The curves are considered and intentional, but they’ve been simplified to feel new and contemporary, creating a balance between historic inspiration and modern simplicity.
Blending Craftsmanship with Innovation
The “Dhalia Collection” reflects our commitment to small-batch, artisanal production. Each piece is made in Portugal, where time-honored techniques meet with modern innovation. I love that these plates aren’t just decorative—they are designed to be used, day in and day out. Durable, functional, dishwasher safe and undeniably elegant, the collection is as much for your everyday breakfasts as it is for formal dinners.
We’ve also ensured the collection is versatile, offering it in white, camel, and blue, Each color is carefully selected to seamlessly fit into kitchens, dining rooms and everywhere food is beautifully presented, whether you want to make a bold statement or keep things understated.
Creating an Experience
For me, design is all about creating an experience—one that engages both the senses and the mind. With “Dhalia”, it’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about how these pieces make you feel when you sit down to dine. I wanted to capture the beauty of French aristocracy but bring it to a modern context where we can still appreciate history while making our own traditions.
Timeless Design for Modern Living
Great design transcends trends, and I believe the “Dhalia Collection” is the perfect example of that. By honoring the traditions of French craftsmanship and integrating modern-day functionality, these pieces will remain relevant for years to come. In a world filled with disposable goods, “Dhalia” stands as a reminder of the lasting value of well-made, thoughtfully designed objects. It invites us to slow down and appreciate the craftsmanship in every piece, turning something as simple as a meal into a considered ritual.
