Most upholstery leather has been covered with a pigment layer that evens out the color and conceals much of what is underneath. Aniline dye does the opposite. The dye penetrates the hide without a heavy pigmented topcoat, allowing the natural grain, markings, and variation to remain visible.

Aniline Leather is a full-grain upholstery leather, retaining the outermost layer of the hide without sanding away its natural character. No two hides are exactly alike, and each develops a patina and its own wear pattern with use. Variation between hides is part of the material, not a flaw.

Cottswald Smoke is the exception within the range, an aniline nubuck made from top-grain hides and lightly sanded after dyeing to raise a short, velvety nap with a suede-like surface.
